In a continuation of our sermon series from the Ten Commandments, this week we focused on the ‘name of the Lord’. Our pastor walked us through the implications of the third commandment with regard to what NOT to do with God’s name. But we ended each service with what TO do with God’s name, inviting people to come forward and kneel in front of the cross, acknowledging God as God. This was our pastor’s idea, and it was very effective. We don’t often do the call-people-forward thing, partially because of the culture of our church, but more recently it’s become a space problem to try anything like this. A modified set-up addressed the space issue this week. The great thing about this invitation to respond was that it broke down the intimidation factor; ‘going forward’ wasn’t linked with confession of sin. Instead, all were invited to come forward as a ‘rehearsal’ for that time when every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
